Do I need ballet experience to attend?
You need no prior ballet experience to participate in the Actual Beginner Adult Ballet Series that meets at 6:30pm Tuesday evenings. Please note that the classes build as the series progresses and the series renews each semester.
Ballet classes meeting at 7:30pm Tuesdays and 6:00pm Thursdays DO require prior experience with ballet technique. If it has been a year or more since you have taken ballet class, please consider starting with the Actual Beginner Adult Ballet Series classes.
How do I get to the studio? Is there an elevator?
Tuesday classes are at 440 Lafayette St in studio 4F. There is an elevator up to the 4th floor.
Please buzz "Playwrights" upon arrival. You MUST be buzzed in the door by "Playwrights" to have access to the 4th floor via the elevator. If the elevator doesn't work, please try to buzz at the door again. I apologize for the inconvenience, but there is no other way.
Thursday classes meet at Ripley Grier Studios, 520 8th Avenue. September 26th will be on the 16th floor in studio 16O. All other classes will be on the 17th floor in studio 17A. There is an elevator up to the classrooms. You MUST have your ID for admittance to the premises.
What should I wear for class?
Ballet clothing is not required! Wear something that you like to move in. A leotard, tights, ballet skirt, leggings, gym shorts... the most important thing is that you feel confident and comfortable!
Socks or ballet slippers are perfect footwear. If you opt for socks, please wear non-grip ones so that your feet do not get stuck to the floor.
Restrooms are available at our studio location should you need to change before class.
How early can I arrive?
I will do my absolute best to begin on time, so plan on arriving within 10 minutes of the class start to ensure that you have enough time to sign in, change and get settled.
Should I bring anything else?
We recommend bringing a water bottle to hydrate throughout class. Ballet class can be surprisingly sweaty!
We also ask that you bring a spirit of exploration and willingness to try new things to class. When learning new skills, it is common to feel uncoordinated or confused. Please ask questions and be open to discovering what your body is capable of in this discipline. The classroom is a safe space filled with encouragement.
